A Reading Retreat with Patrick Gale & Georgina Moore

The Idea

By October the crowds have gone home. The sea is still warm enough to swim in, the light softer, the afternoons built for lingering over lunch instead of racing through it.

This retreat brings fourteen readers to Naxos for a week shaped around two people who know fiction from opposite ends of the desk. Patrick Gale has spent four decades writing the novels. Georgina Moore has spent twenty-five years making sure the world reads them — Patrick's included — before she started writing her own.

No workshops, no itinerary to keep up with. Just good books, easy company, and two remarkable guests woven through the week on their own terms.

Your Sanctuary

Stella Apartments

A charming, family-run hotel that sits right on the water's edge.

  • The Rooms:  Spacious, cool, and private — every room opens onto a balcony with a sea view.

  • The Vibe:  This isn't a stiff hotel; it's a home. Homemade breakfast, reading by the pool, swimming in the sea, sunset from your balcony.

  • The Luxury:  We handle every detail, so all you have to do is turn up and relax.

The Experience

What happens:

Most guests arrive on 3 October to settle in.

Patrick's day

  • A morning talk on his work and forty years of novel-writing

  • Q&A with the group

  • Book signing

  • Dinner together that evening

Georgina's day

  • A rarer kind of talk — what actually happens to a book after the last page is written, from the person who has launched half your bookshelf

  • Q&A with the group, including what it's like to sit on the other side of the desk, as a novelist herself now

  • Book signing

  • Dinner together that evening

Beyond those two days, the week is yours. Read on your terrace. Swim before breakfast. Walk into Naxos Town and get pleasantly lost in the Chora. Join an optional excursion — a village taverna, an olive-oil tasting, the Portara at sunset — or don't. Nobody is marking the register.

Guest Authors

Patrick Gale

Patrick Gale is the author of eighteen novels, including A Place Called Winter, Notes from an Exhibition, A Perfectly Good Man, Mother's Boy — a fictional take on the boyhood of Cornish poet Charles Causley — and Take Nothing With You, his fourth Sunday Times bestseller, now being adapted into a stage play by Trafalgar Studios. His latest novel, Love Lane, is out in 2026. His earlier novel Rough Music became the BBC2 drama, Man in an Orange Shirt, which won the International Emmy for Best Miniseries and is currently in development as a musical. Beyond the page, Patrick is a keen cellist, gardener and beekeeper, a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and patron of the Charles Causley Trust and Penzance LitFest. He lives with his husband, the farmer and sculptor Aidan Hicks, on their farm at Trevilley in the far west of Cornwall, where the garden they've built from scratch has featured on Gardener's World and opens for charity each June.
