Emma Cowell posts her thoughts on coming to Domnista in June

What made you excited to join us for our first reading retreat in the Greek mountains this June?

Aside from the fact I get to explore a magical corner of Greece hand in hand with those on the retreat, it will be a chance to reset and soak in the atmosphere. My mind is so filled with writing and conjuring up worlds, that to venture into a new part of the country I adore will be so exciting and a source of wonderful inspiration too.

What makes a reading retreat in the mountains such a special experience for book lovers?

To be somewhere off the beaten track and experience a totally different version of Greece to the one most people know is hugely valuable. Not only will the mountain air be a wonderful change, but it will give a unique perspective on a much loved country that many don't have the opportunity to enjoy. It's the perfect backdrop to dive into a world of fiction and focus on reading and have some guilt-free time to yourself too!

Why do you think stepping away from everyday life to simply read and reflect is so valuable?

It's such a cliche, but one often doesn't notice the stresses and strains we carry with us until we remove ourselves from the every day. There is great healing to be found in spending time outside of your 'normal' to truly take a break from life, recharge and prepare to renter your own world ready to tackle everything.

What do you hope guests will take away from the retreat?

I hope guests find a love for the varied beauty of Greece, have a greater understanding of the writing process and meet new friends over plates of delicious local food. And also discover new stomach muscles from the giggles we will no doubt enjoy!

What do you think the beauty and peace of the Greek mountains can bring to reading and conversation?

Anywhere in Greece is a springboard for conversation, whether it's something you've seen in town, tasted a surprising or new flavour or are curious about the Greek culture and how it's evolved over the years. The mountains are like a country in their own right and bring such peace when life can be so noisy. I cannot wait to travel to Domnista and enjoy the beautiful countryside and meet everyone on the retreat.
